Hi, everyone! Choosy here. and I want to tell you all a little something about my country, Singapore.

• Singapore means “Lion City” in Sanskrit.
• Singapore lies just above the equator.
• We are 8 hours ahead of GMT, 16 hours ahead of California.
• The national language of Singapore is Malay, the administration language is English and the most widely spoken mother tongue is Mandarin.
• Used to be a part of Malaya (currently, Malaysia) and called Temasek meaning Sea Town, Singapore was named by Sang Nila Utama, an Indonesian who came to Singapore. He came here on a ship with some crew, at that time in his throne as prince, the crown given by his father. Upon reaching Singapore, a storm struck his ship. It stopped when he threw his crown into the sea. He caught sight of a lion on his visit, so decided to give Singapore the name. Now we are no longer a Malaysian state, but an independent republic.
• Singapore was founded by an English man, Sir Stamford Raffles, who discovered the world’s largest flower, the Rafflesia. Singapore celebrated its independence on 9th August 1965, and on that day, Singapore had her first president, Yusof Bin Ishak.
• Our country experiences summer all year but the school holidays last about 3 months in total, and there is no two week vacation for adults. Since we have many races, public holidays include Labour Day, Easter, Christmas, Chinese New Year (4 days), Mooncake/Mid-Autumn/Lantern festival, Vesak Day, Deepavali, New Year, Hari Raya Puasa (2 days) and Hari Raya Haji.
• Apart from Monaco, Singapore is the most densely populated country in the world, with over 4.5 million people in under 700 km2.
• The Bukit Timah Nature Reserve has more species of trees than the entire continent of the North America, also making Singapore one of the only two cities of the world with a tropical rainforest in it.  (The other one is Rio De Janeiro, you know, that vast area of green surrounding Christ the Reedeemer), I think.
• Vanessa Mae, a professional British violinist was born in Singapore.
• Singapore has more than 3,000 kilometres of roads. Stretched end to end, they can cover the distance from Singapore to Hong Kong.
• The world’s first night zoo, The Night Safari, is located in Singapore.
• The world’s tallest man-made waterfall is in the Jurong Bird Park.
• Despite being largely urbanised, Singapore is the largest exporter of ornamental fish (25% of the world market).
• The largest fountain in the world is located in Singapore at Suntec City, called the Fountain of Wealth. Made of cast bronze, it cost an estimated US$6 million to build in 1997.
• In 2003, Singapore’s Changi Airport won the award for “Best Airport Worldwide” for the 16th consecutive year from the UK/Europe edition of the Business Traveller magazine. And on year 2008, a third terminal was built to the airport. The terminal only serves Singapore Airlines flights and can hold the size of the new Airbus A380.
• Someone discovered the Christmas Island (Australia) on his way to Singapore on 25th December. He offered the land to Singapore, until It sold the Christmas Island to Australia for a few million dollars to build the Nicoll Highway. Until now it is a small island about half the size of Singapore and is a good tourism spot.
• Most Singaporeans, in fact about 90%, live in high-rise flats normally 12 stories high but can reach 40 storeys.
• So, to dry clothes, the government has installed bamboo pole holders to the window of the kitchen to every flat in Singapore, even for those living 30+ storeys high. It is also known as “Flags of Singapore” We put one bamboo pole on each holder with our clothing pinned on it, so it just.. hangs there. Watch out below!
• Most Singaporeans speak totally mixed up versions of English, called Singlish. Additional words include lah, leh, mah, lor and meh.
• Singapores two main public transport services include the SMRT Rail system, consisting of over 110 stations (still singapore plans to double the number of stations) and the SMRT bus system. Both the payments are made with smart cards called ez-link cards (get it, easy link).
• Singapore built a “2 million dollar durian” which is actually a theatre, called the Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay. What is a durian, you say? A durian is a tropical fruit, green and thorny. Some say that it is nice, but it makes me vomit, and then brush my teeth a couple of times. Seriously, a durian has “offensed” many tourists. It smells BAD. You can actuallly get it anywhere in Singapore, but it is not allowed in any public transport like train, buses and taxis. The smell though is so strong that you can put in in a car for 1 hour then bring it home, completely eat it and dispose it, then go back to your car 24 hours after and the distinctive smell is stilll there! This links to the myth that drinking alcohol and eating durians at the same time will kill. It is really quite true. Wine increases temperature in your body, then durian only makes it worse.
• VivoCity is Singapore’s largest shopping mall and has the largest cinema. The park on the third floor has a promenade, and the vast knee-deep wading pool on it covers most of the third floor. It is in Harbourfront, One of the southernmost points of mainland Singapore. From there you catch a glimpse of Sentosa.
• Singapore once had the title for the world’s tallest building, which sadly did not last very long. They did not make buildings much taller because the heights should not exceed 280 metres according to air traffic restrictions. We have a giant DHL “hot-air” balloon which goes not so precariously roams around within the Orchard Road area within the high-rise buildings. They have the cable tied to the ground so it does not get loose. Imagine what it would be like if that happened. A next 911 with a balloon and without a double tower or the terrorist.
• Singapore is going to hold the world’s first Youth Olympic Games of 2010. We won a vote competing against Russia.
• The Singapore Flyer, currently the world’s tallest observation wheel, is fully booked for Singapore’s first F1 Race. The tickets for the first three days were $8 888 a capsule, which then went back down to the usual price of about $20. When on top of the wheel, you can catch a view of Batam and Bintan.
• Ghewing gum is banned in Singapore because residents used to stick chewed gum on public transport. YUCK!
• Even Singapore has disputed territories, with Malaysia. The island Pedra Branca has the Horsburgh Lighthouse, which Malaysia calls it the island Pulau Batu Puteh. it is about 15km away from Malaysia and 50km from Singapore.
• The Brunei currency and the Singaporean Currency is the same. So I do not have to go to the Money Changer when I visit Brunei.
• In 1986, the UOB Centre, at 280m, became the tallest building outside of the United States.
• In the same year, (1986) Singapore’s Swissotel the Stamford, at 226m became the world’s tallest hotel, and now it stands as one of the world’s tallest.
• Singapore is a very busy trading port city. Traders from the West (India,etc)
